I've never owned a pair of Birkenstocks until this year - I'm now a believer. They do take a little time to get used to until the cork sole molds to your foot.
I'm flat-footed, and they fit pretty well, although I'd recommend that flat-footed folks order 1/2 or 1 size up since the arch in the sandal will tend to push your smaller toes to the side at the front of the sandal which can cramp your toes.
They're expensive, but you get what you pay for. I only wish they made a better effort to make larger sizes. I tend to wear a 13, and the Birks seem to run a little small.
